We have to be marketers

I distinctly remember going to my one and only college visit as a senior in high school to Lindenwood University.

The admissions staff had a form that you had to fill out that asked what you planned to major in.

Side note: I know it’s part of the process…. I mean, I worked in higher education for 7 years. But how does it make any sense that we expect teenagers to know what they want to do when they “grow up”?

Anyway, I remember having no clue and sort of randomly picking marketing on the form.

And then as part of my campus visit, I had a meeting with the Dean of the marketing department and he asked me…..

“So, why do you want to major in marketing?”

I have NO IDEA what I actually said but I know for sure it wasn’t eloquent!

I truly had no idea.

Now, 22 years later, I know that checking “marketing” on that form was no by accident.

Today, I’m many things: a mom, a wife, a chiropractor, a fitness enthusiast, a sustainable-living wannabe, and…

a marketer.

I accepted that as a part of who I am loooooooooong ago.

I’ve worked through and healed many (certainly not all) stories and limiting beliefs about being seen, about attracting attention to myself, about what other people might think of me.

Right now, as my 40th year of life begins in just two days, I feel more certain than ever that you and I….

we have to learn how to reach people.

We have to do it for the survival of our profession.

We have to do it to stop the slippery erosion of our freedom of medical choice.

We have to do it for the sake our children’s futures.

We have to BE Marketers.

But, hear me when I say this, spinal screenings and health fairs are NOT marketing.

And so….

What IS?
