3 Things You Might Not Know When Starting A New Chiropractic Practice

Starting a new practice is never easy.

Being a mom is practically never easy, either.

Combine the two, and you can find yourself overwhelmed and exhausted.

With that picture in your mind of how great it would be to own your own practice, make your own schedule, and have the time you want with your family….

Well, without some serious intention, that picture may not have become reality.

In fact, sometimes, when you’re trying to run a practice and manage a family, you can find yourself wondering…

Is this worth it?

Should I be taking this much time away from my family?

Will I ever make more money?

Did I make the right choice?

Maybe I should just stop working….

Here’s the good news!

You don’t have to feel this way.

You can find a little bit more of that elusive thing called “balance” between work and family.

You might even be able to work LESS hours and take home even MORE money.

You can have a very profitable part-time chiropractic practice.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve shared with you how I started a practice with:

  • less than $2000 (and that included my first six months of rent)

  • had that practice profitable in less than 90 days

  • and the icing on the cake was that I never worked more than 15 hours a week in (and ON) the practice.

If you haven’t read those posts, you should go check out this one.

As I shared more about my own story in those previous posts, I started to sense that there were some additional things you needed to know about starting a low-cost start-up chiropractic practice.

And that if you don’t know these things–and take action on them–you might flounder.

So if you’re getting ready to start a new chiropractic practice, and you’re committed to providing for your family financially, please read on.

Thing #1: You.  Are. A Marketer.

I know…. You hate the word marketing.

I also know…. You’re probably not doing much of it, because you just don’t look forward to it.

I also know…  If you choose to start a business–a chiropractic practice or ANY business–you have to be a marketer.

For a lot of women, marketing brings up feelings of doubt, inadequacy, and concerns that people will think you’re sleazy, salesy or just in it for the money.

At the root of it all is fear.

Fear of being seen.  Fear of being visible.  Fear of putting yourself out there.  Fear of being judged. Fear of being criticized. Fear of being disliked.

Even though I started studying marketing at just 18 years old, I still feel fear around marketing sometimes.

But here’s the thing: I don’t let that fear stop me.  I feel the fear, and do the thing anyway. I put myself (more specifically, my businesses) out there.

And my dear, no matter what business you start…

A chiropractic practice or something else…

You.  Are. A Marketer.

Thing #2: MONEY.

I’m not saying you should have a lot of it.  That would totally contradict everything I’ve written and spoken about in the How To Start A Practice Even When You Think You Can’t series.

The thing you need to know about money when starting a chiropractic practice is that if your relationship with money is out of alignment, it’s going to be a struggle to grow your practice.

#shitnoonetellsyouinchiropracticschool!!!

For over a year before I started my second chiropractic practice, I was working on my money mindset.

This is more than just getting good at managing money and understanding financial terms.

A healthy money mindset requires you to examine your underlying thoughts and beliefs about money–and possible change them.

In 2015, because of this kind of work, I became aware for the first time that my money story was hurting me a lot more than helping me.

See, the primary thing that I believed about money was that there’s never enough of it.  And that money never lasts.

If you get lucky enough to get some extra money, something always happens that takes it all away.

So I started re-writing my money story.  Like, literally writing a new story and a new perception down on paper.

As I worked to shift my thoughts and beliefs about money, guess what happened….

Money became a LOT easier for me to receive.

If you want to pay off your student loan debt, buy a bigger home, save for your kids’ college funds, and never have to worry about the money if your car needs repairs, start shifting your money story now.

(Denise Duffield Thomas’s books are great on this topic.)

Thing #3: CERTAINTY.

When I started my second practice, first offering housecalls, I knew that that wasn’t going to be the forever plan.

I knew that it was simply a jumping off point.

And I knew that it would work.  I was certain.  There was no other way.

If being successful in practice meant going back to the way I had been doing things before, then I simply wasn’t going to be a chiropractor anymore.

I was certain that my time with my children was more important than my occupation.

I was certain that my marriage was more important than the financial strain and burden of me working 50+ hours a week and not really contributing to our family financially.

I was certain that my health was too precious to waste on years of hustling to build something that could go away anyway.

I was also certain that, even in an area where there are tons of chiropractors, there was still a need for my services.

I was certain (AM certain) that the work that we do as chiropractors is vital.

I am certain that chiropractic changes lives for the better.

I am certain that if healthcare is going to change, it’s going to be because of people like you and me.

You, my dear, have to also be certain.

You will have to be certain in your adjusting skills.

Certain in your treatment recommendations.

Certain in your worthiness of receiving money (hint: you already are).

Certain that you can do this.

Certain that because you declared it, so it is.

You don’t have to be certain about the exact same things that I listed here or certain about the same things as me.

But you have to build your certainty.  And do it NOW.

One of the best ways that you can do that is to surround yourself with a community of women in chiropractic who are also certain that you can build a successful, profitable part-time practice even when almost everyone else is telling you to just work more hours, work harder and save the world.

You need a community of women in chiropractic who are certain that setting boundaries not only protects your longevity in practice, it actually allows your practice to flourish and grow to greater levels.

There’s no better place to have that community than in the Aligned Women program, which will be officially opening for enrollment November 7th through 13th.
